When to sow

Tyffanie

Knowing when to sow is a good starting point for any gardening adventure. When is the best time to start our seedlings? To answer, we’ll need to know when we want to plant out our seedlings into our outdoor gardens.

Victoria Day weekend is a traditional time in Southern Ontario to go to the garden centre, buy some veggies or flowers, turn over your garden plot and plant out. This is a good time because our last frost dates in the region tend to be the beginning of May. By the May 24th holiday, nights are above freezing and the ground is usually warm enough for seedlings.

Knowing when we want to plant out, we can then determine when to start our seeds indoors. We want nice strong plants that are eager and ready to keep growing.

Easter weekend

Our tomatoes, cucumbers, and cucamelons should be sowed and started early. We will sow these seeds the Easter long weekend. Remember, we are growing the Mountain Merit tomato variety, Isnik cucumber, and cucamelons / mouse melons. Read more about the seed selection here.

Flowers

Our Empress of India nasturtiums and the local #TyffsGarden marigolds will be started later. Some of the nasturtium and marigold seeds can be planted directly into the garden after last frosts. We will aim to have these sowed and started indoors on the April 24th weekend (since the groundhogs said it will be an early spring). Read more about the seed selection here.

But our beans

I haven’t forgotten about our Blauhilde Pole Beans. These are best to be sowed directly into our garden beds. We can sow these the Victoria Day weekend. Read more about the seed selection here.
