Location, Location – Where should your potted tomatoes be?
Location location location! – Did you ever hear that phrase before? It’s true for your potted tomato, too.
Tomatoes need full sun which is 8 hours of direct sunlight. But there are a few other location suggestions I want to share with you.
Shading the tomato pot will help regulate the soil temperature in the pot. We don’t want the roots to get too hot. And a shaded pot will help with water management (and weed management, too). The cooler the pot, the less water the plant will use up and the less evaporation will occur. Plus those pesky weeds won’t find it favourable when shaded.
If possible, place a few other potted plants around your tomato pot. Try to use them to shade your tomato container. Or move the pot so the tomato plant is in full sun but the pot is shaded. I like having a few ornamental pots around the tomatoes. The tighter your containers are together, the less they will dry out. Which is handy when you have so many potted plants on the deck.
