Say hello to Doom Boogie

Tyffanie

On my last day of filming, I was emotional. I always believed I may be an extra on a TV or movie set in Kingston, Ontario. Our little city is used often for period pieces because of our historic feel. Maybe a walking-past-a-shop-window scene or something. But I would have never guessed I would have an active acting role in a feature film called Doom Boogie. This gift is something I will forever appreciate and never forget. You better believe, years from now I’ll be starting conversations with “well, when I did Doom Boogie… the movie…”.

About the movie

The synopsis I can share from Branded to Film’s website is this:

A few years after the breakup of her band, now divorced and disillusioned, Kathryn is at a low point. An unexpected invitation for a weekend getaway from her former lead singer promises to be a much needed escape. The wild drive up north is a reminder of her past life on the road and why she left it behind. Following a run-in with some locals, the band arrives at the cottage to find their host is missing. A menacing stranger leaves them all shaken… as dusk settles in, the siege of terror begins.

Any other details, you’ll have to patiently wait. We need to build that anticipation!

Oh.. but did I mention this is my first movie?! Ever?!?! Hello debut!

How I got there

Networking baby! Sometimes, you gotta get yourself out there. Like on that lonely, extremely wet day (and I mean EXTREMELY WET). Dragging yourself, soaked up to the knees and soaked through your jacket, to the local Maker’s Meetup. The Maker’s Meetup is a networking initiative through Tourism Kingston, Kingston Canadian Film Festival, and The Broom Factory to support & engage our creative communities. That is where I met J. Joly.

J had just wrapped up Den Mother Crimson. I had heard very pleasant rumblings of this film. Local people were excited. Excited because they were part of it. It was a true local film.

We got chatting and the topic turned to Queer as Folk. It turns out, J. Joly had worked on Queer as Folk in Toronto. And, like any drag queen born in 2000, I had lots of friends who were extras on that set. We shared stories. It was great. I love reliving those memories. Then he gave me his business card and said “send me an email with your contacts”. I did that very evening. Months later, he sent me a message. This started my journey to Doom Boogie.

The synergy

I can’t tell you how magical and energizing this adventure was. And it was an adventure, for sure! I got to work with actors who were also very talented musicians. I got to work with directors/producers, stunt directors, videographers, audio technicians, lighting experts, special effects magicians, and hair and makeup artists. All these arts, talents and skills.. I was overwhelmed with joy. I felt like we could make another movie instantly. Although, my energy levels were so very low. Filming took everything out of me. But I’d do it again, in a heartbeat.

Let’s not forget the support and love! It was refreshing to know in your heart that everyone around you truly supported you. They all want you to succeed and, in turn, you want them to succeed, too! You don’t often get to experience that. Thank you, everyone!

To be continued

I can’t share everything today. I know you all want to know everything about it. Expect further updates over the months.

The hope is the film will debut at the Kingston Canadian Film Festival in 2025. I’ll let you know when to buy tickets!
