Kingston Witches Walk witch dance 2025

How the Kingston Witches Walk Began

It began in 2023, but it really started years before then. I heard about an underground phenomenon called Witch Walks. They were popping up across North America with the biggest one in Sandusky, Ohio.

The Witch Walk idea is simple:

  • Dress like a witch
  • Find others to do the same
  • Walk the streets of your town, together
  • End the night with a mob dance. Known as the “Witch Dance” or “Hexentanz” or, depending on who you ask, “Shake-your-bacon”

I loved the idea of having Witch Walks in Kingston, Ontario. I could already see our spooky, ancient limestone city come alive with witches and wizards running amok on the downtown streets. But it seemed like no one was going to organize a walk. I asked myself, “What is a good idea if you don’t try?”

In 2023, I said enough was enough. It was time to start a Witch Walk! I called up a spell (aka a Facebook post) asking those interested in helping me organize the first Kingston Witches Walk. I was able to rally 4 interested witches. I’m glad to say most are still with the Kingston Witches Walk today.

The Supreme Witches 2025

The Supreme Witches Coven

It was August of 2023 when we first met. The vibes were vibing! There was an immediate camaraderie and purpose. We recognized the walk to be a fundraising charity, so we got Elizabeth Fry Society of Kingston involved. We called ourselves the Supreme Witches Coven.

From August to October 13, 2023, we somehow were able to throw a walk together, roped in The Cauldron Sisters from Napanee to do the dance, got into the local newspapers (maybe it was that 1000+ Facebook RSVPs), and raised $539 for the Elizabeth Fry Society of Kingston. A wonderful event, for sure! I was hooked! It was the beginning of a magical annual event.

From one walk to a growing movement

Since 2023, the Kingston Witches Walk has hosted a Witch Walk every year. Each year, the walk grew with more witches, more community, and more impact. A great success, engaging the community while fundraising for local women’s charities such as Interval House and Elizabeth Fry Society. It has recently expanded to hosting a Witch Market at the Broom Factory (yes a Witch Market at the Broom Factory! Pure solid gold!). We have fundraised in total $2236.31 since 2023. A staggering amount for volunteers doing what they love to do.

At the end of the day, I am doing what brings me joy. I get to share that joy with my Supreme Witches and fellow witch walk participants. We may have lost organizers over the years, but luckily regained more – and everyone has been passionate. I don’t ever see myself leaving the Supreme Witches or the walk.

If you’ve ever thought about joining us — volunteering, dancing, donating, or just walking — consider this your sign. Catch me at the next Kingston Witches Walk or maybe you’ll see me flying across the moon one night.
