Growing with me updates
Hi SweetPeas! How goes your growing this year? I made a call out earlier this year to share in our gardening journey. We were growing from seed a few veggies and flowers. Plans were made for this year’s growing. However, 2021 taught us we need to be flexible with plans.
Let’s look at the progress in #TyffsGarden this year!
Cucumbers
Isnik Hybrid
Well my Isnik Hybrid seed arrived months later than expected. But we did get the seed and started growing. I’m very pleasantly surprised with what is going on. The patio has a few Isnik cucumbers and they are already growing cucumbers. The ones in the greenhouse are a bit behind but still going strong.
Straight Eight
The months of waiting meant friendly neighbours were stepping in. I got Straight Eight cucumber seeds and started a few plants. The plants are doing well and in fact I have a few fruits growing! Yeah! They are known for uniform fruit.
7082
You want scientific breeding of cucumbers?! We got you some. More neighbours shared 7082 cucumber.
Tomatoes
Mountain Merit
Again, these seeds arrived very late in the season. However, the plants made up for the late planting very quickly. I will likely have tomatoes before the end of the season. The plant itself is growing very well and predictably.
Church
I grew Church tomatoes last year with great success. The plants did take over my greenhouse but gave me huge beefsteak tomatoes. I got a few seeds from neighbours and am waiting patiently to get a tomato to make a good sauce.
Cucamelon / Mouse Melon
The one seed that came on time! I am very very pleased to say the cucumelons are the first fruit #TyffsGarden is producing. I love them. Nice and crunchy! Yum!
Nasturtium Flower
Empress of India
Well… not much to say about these nasturtiums. My plants seem stunted. It may be the variety, or I may not be treating them too well. I’m hopeful of flowers by the end of the season.
Update July 17 – We have a bloom!
Alaska
I had a few Alaska nasturtium seeds laying around. I stuck them in the ground and they grew. In fact, they seem better than the Empress of India. I’m loving the variegated foliage. The few blooms thus far were brilliant and bright. I love these hot oranges and red colours.
Pole Bean – Blauhilde
I overdid it, early on. With all the tomatoes and cucumbers, there seemed to be no time for pole beans. Plus, space got limited. However, there is always time for pole beans! And listening to Carson Arthur on his Take it Outside program on July 10th, pole beans only need 65 days to go from seed to pods. I took an opportunity to plant some at the trailer site in Tweed. They are doing so well with some snow peas. Cross fingers the local rabbits or pests leave them be. But I’m growing them neglected and hard with very little hand watering but lots of great garden mulch.
Tyff’s Marigolds
The marigolds are growing! No blooms yet but buds are present. I’m looking forward to it.
