First day of proper gardening

Tyffanie

There’s something to be said about putting the garden fork and spade in the ground for the first time in the gardening season. I am feeling very satisfied.

Achievement today: I finally moved the tree lilies. These Himalayan variety lilies can grow 6 feet tall. Tall and stunning. The perfume fills the garden. Most importantly, they have a good resistance to lily beetle.

Lily beetle is prominent in Kingston. If you can find something which can take a little beating but perform each year.. it’s a good thing. But they had to move. Only because their current home started getting shaded. They do love full sun.

Another achievement: my alliums are in the ground. Ha! I bought new allium bulbs last year. Unfortunately, they didn’t get out into the ground before we had a deep freeze. But no frett! They stored in the crisper in the refrigerator all winter. And now they are finally in the ground. Oh a great day, indeed.

Spring is evident. It is here. I was half worried the tulips would be in bloom before the Scilla siberica. But those little Scilla popped out of the ground and are beginning to bloom! Check out the picture. I’m looking forward for a sea of blue.

Did I mention, Carson Arthur and I are doing a tomato contest again?!?
